Huayhuash Description

The 10-day Huayhuash Trek* is a fun and beautiful route that most trekkers find to be of moderate difficulty. The trek crosses a high pass almost every day (the highest is (5000 meters) as it moves from drainage to drainage (one of which is reputed to be the actual source of the Amazon River). We meet in the small Andean town Chiquian and from there travel by car to Cuartelhuain where we load our burros and begin our trek. The trek is broken up by a side trip to visit the Sarapo Valley to see the immense west face of Siula Grade, the site of Joe Simpson's epic adventure recounted in "Touching the Void" and on the fifth day we visit hot springs. The daily hikes are usually between 5 and 8 hours at a relaxed pace.
