Los Cedros/Alpamayo/Santa Cruz Description
This trek begins in Cashapampa and follows the traditional Santa Cruz Trek for three days before veering off in a northerly direction into less traveled regions. We enter beautiful valleys like Jankapampa and Queñuallanta with its scenic lake and dense old-growth polylepis forests and cross high passes where the trail seems almost to disappear (don't worry, we know the way!). One of our camps is in the wide Willca valley, which is one of the few places in the region where there are still large herds of alpacas. We also take a side trip into the Alpamayo valley to see the almost perfect pyramidal north face of Alpamayo. With some luck we may see condors. The last couple of days we spend traversing high country in the shadow of Santa Cruz peak passing remote archeological sites, more high lakes, and then finally descending a large number of switchbacks to Hualcayan village where we finish our trek not far at all from our starting point.
